These include lymph node removal following breast surgery, "look-and-see" surgery (sometimes after ovarian cancer surgery and/or following chemotherapy to see if there is any remaining cancer), and removal of cancerous primary organs, such as the spleen when treating lymphomas or leukemias, for example. Admittedly, despite these criticisms, great strides have been made in conventional medicine, and I believe there are many good doctors who want their patients to get well no matter what kind of treatment is ultimately responsible for their healing.

The results of a 12-year study of 44 women who had breast surgery shows that those who had operations between 7 and 20 days after the start of their last period were four times less likely to have cancer reoccur in comparison to those who had surgery at the very end or beginning of the menstrual cycle. Progesterone levels are high and estrogen levels low at the beginning and end of the menstrual cycle, and studies have shown that cancer cells grow faster at those levels. Fisher, writing in the September 1968 issue of Annals of Surgery, stated: As a result of its severe toxicity and its lack of therapeutic effect, further use of 5-FU as an adjuvant to breast surgery in the regimen employed is unwarranted.2 Dr. Saul A. During the 1960s, there was a resurgence of enthusiasm for conservative breast surgery. Physicians leaned toward less aggressive surgery and literal preservation of the breast, which meant that only the tumor was removed. This procedure was referred to as a local extrication, tumorectomy, lumpectomy, or nodulectomy. When it was necessary to take away a part of the breast, it was called a partial mastectomy.
His record demonstrated that conservative breast surgery is as effective as its radical counterpart. As was to be expected, he was severely criticized by his colleagues. They set aside his conclusions and continued with the established surgical methods. In 1996, the ACS expected more than 180,000 women to develop breast cancer. The majority of those women were treated with mastectomy, but more than 20 medical centers around the United States initiated protocols calling for treatment by conservative surgery and radiation.

One woman with breast cancer, the poet Audre Lorde, recalled that after her breast surgery she ached to talk to a woman who would understand what she was experiencing. But after a Reach to Recovery volunteer visited her hospital room, she ended up "feeling even more isolated than before." The volunteer talked about "what man I could capture . . . [and] whether my two children would be embarrassed by me in front of their friends.
